SEN Assessment Survey - KCC Initial Response

KCC’s Head of SEN, Julie Ely said

“We are grateful to the Forum for gathering the views of over 450 families in this survey.  The comments have been helpful to SEN Managers in identifying where we should be prioritising our attention this year. We heard families experience of assessments that take too long and we have asked an independent expert to work with us (in October) to see what we can do differently to streamline the steps in our processes.  Where parent told us that we need to make more information available we have agreed to set up a small working party, including parents, to help us write new content for our web pages and leaflets.  Because 31% of families felt their child’s plan was not accurately identifying and describing their child, we have incorporated this into our programme of training for managers and team leaders to quality assure the EHC Plans that we produce.

Many of the comments suggested we need to do more to help schools deliver the provision in EHC Plans and because of this we are looking at how we can better target the resources we have for training to benefit whole schools, not just individuals, as well as making sure that they understand their duties to put the help in place. We noted that lots of the comments related to social skills and we will ensure there is an even greater focus on supporting children with speech, language and communications needs.  We will also look at how we can support pre-school settings to train their staff.

We will be ensuring that the results of the survey are shared with colleagues across social services and health so that they have a good understanding of what Kent families told us we could do to improve how we work in partnership with them.  Please extend our appreciation to the families who took the time to share their experiences.”
